WebOS (previously known as Palm OS) is proprietary mobile operating system designed specifically to be run on Palm’s devices. The first device that was launched with Web OS is Palm Pre on 8 January 2009. WebOS is featuring online social network and Web 2.0 integration, the latest WebOS 2.0 was released in October 2010, features better multi-tasking.

WebOS’s graphical user interface is designed for use on touchscreen devices, with multi-touch gesture support to ease navigation through the menu. On its latest version WebOS includes support for various web technologies such as HTML5, JavaScript, CSS, Adobe Flash 10.1b (will not run on Pixi or Pixi Plus). Another features from WebOS is Synergy which allows user to sign in to accounts on Gmail, Yahoo, Facebook, etc, this combines all the messaging, conversations in one single list.

WebOS applications are written in JavaScript, HTML5, and AJAX, and other web technology, which intended to spare application developers from learning a new programming language. For every WebOS application developers are required to have an account on Palm’s developer site.

There are three kind of accounts commercial account, open source account, and community account. These accounts are free, but have different requirement or feature. For commercial account, developers are getting 70% of the application revenue, whereas, open source accounts are required for its software source code to be published to the publice. Community account is where the applications cannot be published for money, but for internal or in-house applications.
